AFTER-SCHOOL SAFETY

Choose an after-school program with clear answers.

A welcoming program should be able to explain who supervises children, how pickup works, and how families hear about changes.

A CLEAR PLACE TO START

Understand the choices before you connect.

Supervision and check-in

Ask how staff know which children have arrived, who is responsible for each group and how attendance is confirmed at the end of the day. Request the program’s written check-in and sign-out process.

Pickup and communication

Confirm who may pick up a child, how identity is checked and what happens when a caregiver is late. Ask which channel the program uses for schedule changes or an urgent issue.

Activities and inclusion

Look for an age-appropriate balance of play, quiet time and structured enrichment. Ask how the team adapts activities for children with different strengths and needs without sharing confidential records through a public form.

Make the decision

Visit when the program is operating if possible. Compare what you saw with the written information, then verify current capacity, cost and transportation directly with the provider.

Information is educational, not an admission or placement guarantee. Verify eligibility, availability and district assignment directly with the receiving organization.
